Adulting Sucks

Daily writing prompt
What’s a moment when you realized you were officially an adult?

You want to know when I realized I was officially an adult?

It wasn’t when I turned 18.

It wasn’t when I got my first job, started paying bills, got married, or even when I had my first baby.

Nope.

It was one random day when I looked around at all these kids in my house and had the horrifying realization:

I CAN’T SEND THEM HOME!

Because apparently… THIS IS THEIR HOME.

And I’m the adult.

I’m the person they come to when they’re hungry. When somebody’s crying. When somebody hit somebody. When they need money. When they can’t find something that is literally sitting right in front of them.

“Mom, what’s for dinner?”

I DON’T KNOW! I WAS WAITING FOR AN ADULT TO FIGURE THAT OUT TOO!

There really should be a moment when somebody officially warns you that childhood is over. Like a graduation ceremony or something.

Congratulations! From this point forward, everybody’s problems are now YOUR problems.

Because somewhere between becoming a wife, having babies, paying bills, making appointments, figuring out dinner, keeping little humans alive, and trying to remember who needs to be where and at what time…I became the grown-up.

And the craziest part?

I always wanted to be a mother. I just pictured things a little differently.

Okay… A LOT differently.

Little Shy had a whole plan for her future. I was going to have TWO kids.

Life looked at that plan and said, “Awww, that’s cute.”

Now I can look around at the noise, the mess, the yelling, the laughter, the crumbs that somehow appear five minutes after I JUST CLEANED, and realize that somewhere along the way, this chaotic life became mine.

Adulthood didn’t arrive with some big announcement.

It snuck up on me.

One minute I was somebody’s child dreaming about what my life would look like, and the next minute I was standing in the middle of a house full of children realizing…

Wait a minute. I’m somebody’s mama.

Actually, I’m a LOT of somebodies’ mama!

And as overwhelming, exhausting, unpredictable, and downright ghetto as adulthood can be sometimes, I wouldn’t trade the life I ended up with.

Because those kids I jokingly wish I could “send home”?

They are home.

And somehow, in the middle of all this beautiful chaos, I grew up too.

If you want to know exactly how a woman who once pictured herself having TWO children ended up looking around asking, “Where the heck did all these kids come from?!”…oh, honey. There is a WHOLE story behind that.

Trust me…you’ll understand why I blame Darren (my husband).
